The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources aims to recruit the most suitable people for our workforce.
We maintain a register of individuals interested in short-term temporary employment (non-ongoing of less than 12 months) at the APS 1–6 and Executive Level 1-2 levels. This register of interest provides us with access to people who can fill short-term roles at short notice in all our offices, in Canberra and around Australia.
Temporary work opportunities may arise in any area, including policy development, programme implementation, economic and scientific research, communications, information and communication technology (ICT), human resources (HR) and other corporate services.

How it works
We may contact you if we have a vacancy that matches your skills and experience and your application meets the requirements of the role. Placement on the temporary employment register does not guarantee an offer of employment.
Non-ongoing (temporary) employment opportunities may be offered on a full-time, part-time or intermittent (casual) basis for up to 12 months. Applications will remain on our temporary employment register for 6 months.
Applicants are encouraged to lodge a new application if:
- employment and personal details change
- the registration period expires.
To be eligible for non-ongoing employment you must meet the same requirements as you would for ongoing positions, such as:
- Australian citizen
- six months probation
- pre-employment medical assessment
- character and police checks
- reference checks
- formal qualifications checks, if applicable.
If you have redundancy benefit from an Australian Public Service agency or the Australian Parliamentary Service, you are ineligible for engagement as a non-ongoing employee until the ‘redundancy period’ has expired.
Salary and conditions
Terms and conditions will be in accordance with the department’s
current enterprise agreement. The actual level of engagement will depend on the duties to be performed. The department offer’s excellent
