Australian food companies can learn how to save money while benefiting the environment through a series of eco-efficiency workshops to be held around the country in June and July.
Many case studies show that companies can make significant savings for the environment and their budgets through eco-efficiency measures. This can give them a competitive advantage.
Through the eco-efficiency workshops, food companies can learn how to develop their business by reducing their wastes, and their use of water, energy, chemicals and packaging.
Eco-efficiency is about companies saving money while also benefiting the environment.
The workshops will be held in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. (See attached list of locations and dates)
Food companies including Harvest FreshCuts, Buderim Ginger, Bundaberg Brewed Drinks, Golden Circle, Goodman Fielder and Food Spectrum have already conducted eco-efficiency assessments in an earlier project funded by the Australian Government and have positive stories to tell. The Coalition Government funding will be provided to the Australian Industry Group (AIG) and the United Nations Environment Program Working Group for Cleaner Production in the Food Industry (UNEP Working Group) to conduct the workshops. State government agencies will assist with industry facilitation and information provision at the workshops.
The Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is also seeking industry comments on the manual and self-assessment toolkit produced by the AIG and the UNEP Working Group in the earlier project.
State government and industry representatives are being invited to assess the potential for a national project to promote eco-efficiency in the food industry.
The workshop reports will be used to assess the industry’s interest in a national approach to eco-efficiency.
