Armidale hosting ABARES final Regional Outlook conference for 2014

1 October 2014

Minister for Agriculture and Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, will open the final Regional Outlook conference for the year in Armidale on 15 October.

Economic trends and regional impacts, commodity updates and a host of local issues will be on the agenda for the conference, hosted by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES).

The conference features leading private sector speakers and ABARES economists who will discuss agricultural commodity forecasts, share international business experience, analyse key regional industries and explore local challenges such as securing investment, changing land use, irrigation and resilience.

Sessions will explore the 'Global economy - local impacts,' 'Productivity and innovation in agriculture,' ''Thriving in a changing environment' and 'Agricultural capacity and education.'

Dr Jammie Penm, Chief Commodity Analyst at ABARES, is speaking at the conference on 'National and international issues affecting the region'. He noted the program is tailored to the region and the conference is open to everyone.

"The Regional Outlook conferences are an essential part of ABARES delivery of commodity forecasts and research results direct to rural and regional communities," Dr Penm said.

"Each conference delivers thought-provoking information, from local agricultural data and innovative business practices through to the global economic overview and demand trends.

"Conference delegates can access the latest economic and commodity forecasts and scientific data, discuss industry trends, make new contacts in their community, and explore new approaches to traditional issues. With 12 speakers taking part there is potential for plenty of discussion."

Group registration rates are available to organisations registering five or more delegates. For more information, download the conference program and registration form at daff.gov.au/abares/regional.
