The business of agriculture on the agenda at ABARES Geraldton Regional Outlook conference 26 August

10 August 2015

Senator the Hon. David Johnston, Senator for Western Australia, is confirmed as the keynote speaker at the Geraldton Regional Outlook Conference.

Speakers at the Geraldton Regional Outlook conference will discuss accessing capital for the Asian opportunity, the future for Western Australian agriculture, commodity outlook for Western Australia, weather and climate trends, commercial fisheries and aquaculture and broadacre farming.

ABARES Chief Commodity Analyst, Dr Jammie Penm, is speaking at the conference, on the national and international issues affecting the region. He said conference delegates will hear from a range of industry leaders, producers and other ABARES speakers on the key regional issues as well as national issues that influence the region.

“This year’s conference will consider issues of profitability, productivity and innovation, with a particular focus on how these issues relate to the Geraldton region,” Dr Penm said.

“The release of the Australian Government’s Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper has helped to focus attention on productivity and profitability in agriculture. With new trade opportunities and growing overseas food demand, these are exciting times for agriculture in Australia.

“This conference will look at how the sector, and the Geraldton region in particular, can generate business innovation and productivity, drive profitability, and how farm businesses can thrive in a changing business environment.”

Dr Penm said conference delegates could access up-to-date commodity and economic data, network with other delegates, discuss the agricultural outlook and issues for the region, and use the information from the day to update their own business and industry knowledge.

The ABARES Regional Outlook conference will be held in Geraldton on 26 August 2015. Registration fees are waived however pre-conference enrolment is essential.
