Coffs Harbour welcomes ABARES Regional Outlook to town
14 October 2015
Farmers, fishers and foresters on the New South Wales North Coast region will gather for the ABARES Regional Outlook conference in Coffs Harbour on 28 October to hear the latest forecasts and economic outlook for the region.
ABARES Executive Director, Karen Schneider, said conference delegates would hear from a range of expert speakers from ABARES, the private sector and producers.
“The conference will consider issues of profitability, productivity and innovation, with a particular focus on how these issues relate to the region and its industries,” Ms Schneider said.
“The North Coast region of NSW makes an important contribution to the state and the nation’s economy. The region added $130 million to the state’s economy in gross agricultural production in 2012–13, and also produces the lion’s share of the NSW crop of mangoes, bananas and sugar cane.
“There are also some emerging industries, such as blueberries and coffee, that continue to grow—NSW Department of Primary Industries estimates that about 70 per cent of the national blueberry crop is produced in the region.
“The release of the Australian Government’s Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper has helped to focus attention on productivity and profitability in agriculture. With new trade opportunities and growing overseas food demand, these are exciting times for agriculture in Australia.
“This conference will look at how the sector, and NSW North Coast region in particular, can generate business innovation and productivity, drive profitability, and how farm businesses can thrive in a changing business environment.”
Ms Schneider said conference delegates could access the latest economic and commodity forecasts and scientific data, discuss industry trends, make new contacts in their community, and explore new approaches to traditional issues.
“I encourage anyone in the region with an interest in agriculture to attend,” Ms Schneider said.
