Alpine resort fined for breaching environmental conditions

  • Media release
  • EPBC Act
21 July 2020

The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment has issued infringement notices to the Mount Buller and Mount Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board for failing to meet environmental approval conditions.

The Mount Buller Sustainable Water Security project in Victoria’s alpine region was approved on 25 June 2018 under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) with 19 environmental conditions imposed to protect unique ecosystems such as the alpine bogs.

On 29 May 2020, the department issued two infringement notices totalling $25,200 to the approval holder for not meeting two of their conditions requiring the action to be undertaken within the specified project area with no impact to the bogs.

The approval holder cooperated with the department’s enquires and paid the infringement notices on 24 June 2020.

The department takes non-compliance with approval conditions seriously. This penalty serves as a reminder that approval holders are expected to fully comply with their approval conditions.
