Media statement: Review of live sheep exports by sea during the Northern Hemisphere summer: public consultation on draft report

  • Have your say
  • Live animal exports
16 December 2021

Public consultation is now open on the Department’s draft review of the regulatory settings for the export of live sheep by sea to, or through, the Middle East during the Northern Hemisphere summer (1 May to 31 October).

The review considered whether the current regulatory settings have been effective in supporting acceptable animal welfare outcomes whilst maintaining the sustainability of the live sheep export industry. The draft review also looked at evidence for retaining or changing the prohibition dates.

The department is inviting all interested parties, including livestock exporters, animal welfare groups, producer groups and members of the public to provide their input via the Have Your Say webpage.

The department will consider all submissions before finalising the review.

Submissions should:

  • identify which section of the report is being addressed and
  • include evidence or data to support any comments.

Consultation will be open for a period of 6 weeks, from Friday 17 December to Friday 28 January 2022 at 5 pm.

This timeframe will enable the department to complete the review by the end of February 2022, which in turn will give farmers, exporters and customers certainty and enable them to plan for the 2022 Northern Hemisphere summer.
