In October 2011 the Australian Government announced a range of livestock export trade reforms. Included in this announcement was the allocation of funding to the Approved Supply Chain Improvements Program.
The program provides $5 million over two years (2011-12 to 2012-13) to encourage the Australian livestock export industry investment in approved supply chains in Australian livestock export markets. At least 20 per cent of program funds ($1 million) are to be used to encourage and promote the use of stunning in the slaughter of Australian livestock exports.
Under the program, up to 25 per cent of industry investment in eligible activities undertaken to improve animal welfare in approved export supply chains will be eligible for reimbursement (i.e. the government will provide $1 for each $3 provided by industry).
Program funding will be capped at:
- $200 000 per exporter per country with an additional $50 000 per exporter per country for stunning related activities
- $100 000 per supply chain per country
Who is eligible?
At the time of application, the applicant will need to possess the following attributes:
- be an Australian livestock export business entity (i.e. hold a current license to export livestock under the Australian Meat and Livestock Industry Act 1997) or livestock export industry body such as Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), LiveCorp or Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council (ALEC), and
- be registered for tax purposes in Australia with a current Australian Business Number (ABN) and be headquartered in Australia
What activities qualify for funding?
Activities will be eligible for reimbursement under the program if they have been paid for and delivered on, or after, the start date of the program (21 October 2011).
Funding will be available for eligible activities in existing approved export supply chains in international markets for livestock species intended for feeding or slaughter.
Improvement activities for Australian domestic and on-ship components of a supply chain are not eligible for this program.
For comprehensive details on eligible activities, please refer to the program guidelines.
