Purpose
The purpose of this notice is to advise exporters of the suspension of feeder/slaughter sheep and goat exports to Malaysia between 7 July 2018 and 25 August 2018.
Background
Following Korban in 2017, reports were received by the department demonstrating poor animal welfare outcomes and loss of control and traceability of Australian livestock exported to Malaysia.
The Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council (ALEC) advised the department that members had agreed not to export sheep or goats to Malaysia in the six weeks prior to Korban 2018 due to concerns around compliance with ESCAS requirements.
Considering the above information, the high risk of non-compliance during Korban, the lack of response from exporters in regard to ESCAS breaches in 2017, and the evident lack of effectiveness of exporter’s control and traceability systems, the department has determined that sheep and goat exports should be suspended for the six weeks prior to Korban 2018.
Instructions
Korban commences in the evening of 21 August 2018.
The department will not approve exports of feeder or slaughter sheep and goats to Malaysia scheduled to depart in the six weeks prior to Korban 2018 (i.e. from the 7 July 2018).
Exports may resume as normal from 26 August 2018.
Consignments of breeder livestock will be considered on a case by case basis.
