To inform exporters of the conditions for live sheep exports to the Middle East during the upcoming Northern Hemisphere summer (May to October).
The Australian Meat and Live-stock Industry (Prohibition of Export of Sheep by Sea to Middle East – Northern Summer) Order 2019 prohibits the export of sheep by sea from 1 June 2019 to 31 August 2019 where the vessel will travel through waters in the Arabian Sea north of latitude 11˚N at any time during the voyage.
For any exports of sheep departing during May 2019 and travelling through waters in the Arabian Sea north of latitude 11˚N at any time during the voyage, exporters must comply with the conditions under the Australian Meat and Live-stock Industry (Export of Sheep by Sea to Middle East) Order 2018 (as amended). These conditions include:
- allometric stocking densities requiring between 11 and 39 per cent more space for sheep than prescribed under the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock;
- independent auditing of pen air turnover readings;
- automatic watering arrangements; and
- a reduced notifiable mortality level of 1 per cent.
In addition, for any exports of sheep during May 2019 travelling through waters in the Arabian Sea north of latitude 11˚N at any time during the voyage, the department will require exporters to equip vessels with environmental data recording devices to record wet bulb temperatures. The data is to be collected and reported back to the department.
The department has contacted exporters to notify them of the additional conditions for exporting sheep by sea to the Middle East for the 2019 Northern Hemisphere summer.
The department will provide further advice for consignments of sheep destined to travel to or through the Middle East during September and October 2019 at a later time.
Any exporters planning to export sheep by sea during May 2019 who have not yet notified the department should do so as soon as possible to ensure compliance with the above conditions.
