Animal welfare audit standards and auditor checklist for the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS)

As part of the effort to reduce the regulatory burden industry bears in meeting ESCAS requirements, the department has consolidated the animal welfare auditor guidance and checklists used to assess compliance with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) animal welfare recommendations.

The revised documents were developed in close consultation between industry and the department. Changes to the documents used by auditors have made them clearer, less repetitive and more outcomes-based, while maintaining the core elements of the OIE recommendations.

The revised documents are:

  • updated ESCAS animal welfare standard
  • guidance to auditors on conducting animal welfare audits
  • template for use during the audit
  • updated summary audit report template

These documents replace the previous audit guidance and checklists for cattle, buffalo, sheep and goats provided on the department website.

Further advice on the documents for exporters and auditors to use during audits of ESCAS supply chains is outlined in EAN2015-05.
