Compliance Assessment 29: Cattle Exported to Vietnam

Outcome of Assessment

On 16 March 2014, South East Asian Livestock Services Pty Ltd (SEALS) reported to the department a non-compliance with Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) requirements for a consignment of cattle exported to Vietnam in February 2014. SEALS advised that 27 cattle were slaughtered at three abattoirs that were not included in the company’s approved supply chain. The importer had sent experienced staff and nine cattle to each abattoir to provide training, in preparation for the abattoirs being added to the exporter’s supply chain.

The three abattoirs are approved in other exporters’ supply chains, all use stunning and had been audited between October 2013 and February 2014 and found to be compliant with ESCAS requirements.

SEALS provided details of the corrective actions the company has put in place. Corrective actions included re-affirming ESCAS requirements with the importer and the provision of further training. The department accepted these corrective actions and recorded a minor non-compliance against the SEALS Vietnam supply chain.
