Sheep exported to Israel

On 12 August 2016, the department received a notification from Animals Australia of a truck roll-over involving Australian sheep in Israel on 9 August 2016. Video footage taken at the scene following the accident was provided.

The department reviewed the report and video and determined that the truck roll-over was outside the control of the exporter and there was no non-compliance with ESCAS requirements.

All exporters of sheep to Israel were contacted about the incident. Livestock Shipping Services confirmed they were aware of the incident in their supply chain and provided further information. Seventy three animals were killed or euthanised at the scene as a result of the accident. A further three animals died at the facility where the remaining animals were taken to recover. Two veterinarians attended the accident, including a veterinarian from the Israel government veterinary service.

No further action was required and no regulatory action was taken by the department.
