Report 127: Cattle exported to Indonesia
On 7 December 2016, the department received a report from Wellard Rural Exports Pty Ltd (Wellard) about a road accident (truck rollover) in Indonesia involving 15 cattle exported from Australia. The accident occurred on 28 November 2016 when a truck was transporting cattle from an Indonesian port to an ESCAS approved feedlot. A traffic accident report from Indonesian police (with translation) and photographs from the accident were provided.
The police report stated one animal was killed in the accident, three were secured by the importer, and 11 animals had escaped. Wellard confirmed the three animals secured were contained and loaded on a truck, taken to an ESCAS approved feedlot and monitored for injuries in a hospital pen. A search for the missing animals was conducted, however the 11 escaped animals were not located. Wellard subsequently provided a list of Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) tags of the 11 missing cattle following the completion of reconciliation of the exported livestock.
The department reviewed the report and information and determined that the truck roll-over was outside the control of the exporter and there was no non-compliance with ESCAS requirements.
Wellard has exported 126 consignments of feeder / slaughter cattle to Indonesia since ESCAS was introduced to this market on 8 July 2011. This is the first reported road accident.
