Further to MAA2013-03 and MAA2013-04, the Department of Agriculture (the department) provides the following update on the trade in processed and semi-processed organic products to the Republic of Korea:
On 31 December 2013, Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) issued a press release regarding the 1 January 2014 introduction of revised organic regulations for processed and semi-processed goods. In this release, MAFRA provided notification of an ‘educational period’ which will be in effect from 1 January – 30 June 2014.
The department understands that during the ‘educational period’, imported goods will be inspected for compliance with the revised regulations at the market level, and a warning will be provided to Korean distributors of any items found to be non-compliant. The department understands that distributors of non-compliant items will be encouraged to delete the organic label and will be advised that any non-compliant product imported on or after 1 January 2014 will not be permitted sale after 30 June 2014. However, product imported into Korea prior to 1 January 2014 will be permitted sale until the expiration date of the product. Please direct any enquiries regarding this matter to the contacts listed above.
