Murray–Darling Basin policy

The Australian Government welcomed the release on 10 April 2019 of the findings and recommendations in the final report of the Independent Assessment of the 2018-19 Fish Deaths in the Lower Darling. Read the Australian Government’s response to the findings on our Government responses page.

The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment is committed to delivering water reforms identified under the Water Act 2007 and the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

In delivering these legislative and statutory commitments the department may work with stakeholders to develop policy measures that further identify ways to deliver on agreed outcomes.

Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism

During the development of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan, Basin water ministers requested an adjustment mechanism be included in the Basin Plan to allow for better social, economic and environmental outcomes than would otherwise have been achieved by the Basin Plan.

The sustainable diversion limit (SDL) adjustment mechanism is provided for in chapter 7 of the Basin Plan.
