Around two-thirds of Australia’s agricultural products are exported. Creating new, and maintaining existing, export market opportunities which provide the greatest gains for agricultural industries is a priority for the Department of Agriculture.
Located in Canberra and overseas, the Trade and Market Access Division pursues international market access for agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries through bilateral, regional and multilateral engagement with trading partners. It also represents Australia’s agricultural interests in international fora, such as the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Group of Twenty (G20) and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and works to ensure Australia’s agricultural policies and settings meet international obligations. The division works in close collaboration with technical areas of the department, other government agencies (particularly Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) and industry organisations.
The Department of Agriculture has agricultural specialists working in key overseas markets. They
- work to develop and maintain markets for our agricultural exports
- strengthen relationships and cooperation
- facilitate visits and inspections to progress technical market access requests, and
- play a significant role in rectifying any problems with Australian agricultural goods on entry to their foreign destinations.
