Export quotas

International trade agreements may include tariff rate quotas that reduce tariff rate arrangements for certain products at specific volumes. Exporters can get reduced import taxes on eligible goods where a tariff rate quota exists. This can save money for Australian businesses.

Quotas can be administered by the competent authority in either the importing or exporting country.

What we do

We manage Australia’s 63 export quotas. How we issue a quota certificate depends on the product and its destination.

The certificate covers the volume of the quota request (either in kilograms, tonnes, litres or pieces).

We will administer the quotas and manage them as prescribed in the Export Control (Tariff Rate Quota – General) Rules 2021 or the Export Control (Tariff Rate Quotas – Sheepmeat and Goatmeat Export to the European Union and United Kingdom) Rules 2021 on either a first-come, first-served basis, an allocation method, a high-fill trigger method or the production method as described in the legislation.

For further information and specific details on each of these individual quotas, please see the below links.

How to apply

Quotas are managed according to a schedule. Check our quota calendar for timeframes.
