The Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific

The Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) is a regional aquaculture research and development network. NACA promotes rural development through sustainable aquaculture. Australia has been a member of NACA since 1998.

Fisheries Research and Development Corporation

The Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) is a co-funded partnership between its two stakeholders: the Australian Government and industry. The FRDC’s role is to plan and invest in fisheries research, development and extension activities in Australia. This includes providing leadership and coordination of the monitoring, evaluation and reporting of research, development and extension activities, facilitating dissemination, extension and commercialisation.

Aquaculture in Commonwealth waters

On 27 September 2021, the Australian and Tasmanian Government’s signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support a framework to deliver offshore aquaculture in Commonwealth waters off the coast of Tasmania.

On 1 April 2022, the Australian and Tasmanian Governments signed an agreement under section 72 of the Fisheries Management Act 1991 and an associated operational Memorandum of Understanding that provides the legal framework for offshore aquaculture research to be undertaken in the Commonwealth waters in Bass Strait.
