Fisheries and aquaculture statistics

ABARES Australian Fisheries and Aquaculture Statistics (AFAS) is a collection of data updated annually on key indicators of activity in the Australian fisheries and aquaculture sector.

AFAS aims to provide statistical information for the fishing and aquaculture industry, fisheries managers, policy makers and researchers. AFAS has three component reports that each focus on:

  • Production data from all Australian jurisdictions, as well as trade data and consumption and employment statistics – AFAS report Australian fisheries and aquaculture statistics published in the second half of the following financial year, as jurisdiction data becomes available.
  • Commonwealth fisheries production and value data – AFAS report Australian fisheries and aquaculture statistics: Commonwealth production published in December for the financial year just finished.
  • Trade data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics – AFAS report Australian fisheries and aquaculture statistics: Trade published in December for the financial year just finished.

AFAS includes downloadable statistical tables in Excel format.

AFAS complements ABARES annual medium-term forecasts and projections of fisheries and aquaculture production and exports published in March. For the most recent outlook (including projections to 2029−30) see the ‘Fisheries and aquaculture’ chapter in ABARES Agricultural Commodities Report March 2025 edition. This report also discusses factors affecting, and broader trends in, the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

In March 2022 ABARES updated the classifications used to report Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry export statistics. These changes will improve the quality of information available to users of trade statistics. These changes may result in changes to historical time series for trade statistics due to the movement of trade items between categories, or the addition of new items. A detailed explanation of ABARES classification of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry statistics is available, along with a concordance to the previous definition. This classification is based on the Australian Harmonised Export Commodity Classification.
