Who does this notice affect?

This notice is of interest to international vessel masters, shipping agents and importers of timber and timber products.

What has changed?

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (the department) will commence its annual heightened surveillance regime for managing the risks posed by Burnt Pine Longicorn (BPL) beetles (Arhopalus ferus) on vessels departing from New Zealand from 00:01 hours (NZST) at the start of Saturday 19th November 2022.

South East Trawl Fishery structural adjustment package

Within the South East Trawl Fishery, stocks of several fish species have declined below sustainable limits and are not recovering. The South East Trawl Fishery is also known as the Commonwealth Trawl Sector of the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery.

To protect fish stocks and halt species decline, the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has lowered the allowable catch for at-risk species and implemented area closures from 1 May 2023.

Who does this notice affect?

All importers, accredited persons and customs brokers who lodge green coffee beans under tariff 0901.1 to the department for biosecurity assessment.

What has changed?

Effective 21st November 2022, green coffee beans imported under tariff 0901.1 will be in scope for the class 19.2 AEPCOMM approved arrangement as well as the Highly Compliant Importer scheme.

Letter of free sale

A letter of free sale is sometimes required for registering non-prescribed goods with an importing country authority prior to export.

If the importing country does not state that a letter of free sale is to be from Australia’s competent authority (that is, the department) one can instead be issued by a Chamber of Commerce.

Who does this notice affect?

Clients in the import and shipping industries—including freight forwarders, importers and customs brokers—associated with importing goods that require BMSB treatment during the BMSB risk season (goods manufactured in or shipped from target risk countries, that have been shipped between 1 September 2022 and 30 April 2023 (inclusive)).
