Biosecurity Advice 2014/07 - Final risk analysis report for the release of Cydia succedana for the biological control of gorse (Ulex europaeus)

7 May 2014

This Biosecurity Advice notifies stakeholders that a policy recommendation has been made to not allow release of the tortricid moth Cydia succedana for the biological control of gorse (Ulex europaeus). Release of Cydia succedana has not been recommended due to the identification of significant off-target effects and potential consequences.

Biological Control Agent Risk Analyses

Biological control agent risk analyses, as opposed to plant commodity import risk analyses, do not assess the probability of entry, establishment and spread.

Biological control agents intended for release are deliberately introduced, distributed, aided to establish and spread. Therefore it would be inappropriate to assess the probability of entry, establishment and spread. Biological control agent risk analyses focus only on off-target effects, as this is the only concern with regard to the release of biological control agents.
