Shipping and yachting in Torres Strait

​​The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry regulates the movement of all vessels, goods and passengers from the Torres Strait under the Biosecurity Act 2015.

This includes the monitoring of vessels arriving on mainland Australia from designated biosecurity zones in the Torres Strait, to assess any biosecurity risks posed by the vessels, or goods and passengers.

Spiked pepper

What to look for

A shrub or small tree that can grow to eight metres. The p​​lant features erect branches with aromatic leaves that droop. Mature plants flower and fruit throughout the year: flowers are cream-coloured and develop opposite most leaves.

Sour grass

Digitaria insularis also known as cotton grass or feather-top grass.

What to look for

Large, coarse, tufted grass with rough, hairy leaves. Flowers all-year round.

Siam weed

What to look for

A fast-growing shrub or scrambling weed that can grow several metres in height. The plant has branches and leaves in opposite pairs and produces bunches of fluffy white to pink flowers during June to September.
