The National Fire Ant Eradication Program’s National Management Group (NFAEP NMG) met in person at NFAEP Headquarters in Berrinba for its June 2025 meeting. Members toured the facility and surrounding areas, including a visit to Kagaru to meet with locals affected by fire ants.
The Executive Program Director reported strong progress in building operational capacity including realignment of the organisational structure to improve efficiency and responsiveness, by dividing the management of aerial treatment zones into North and South regions.
Despite challenging weather conditions in 2024–25, including Tropical Cyclone Alfred, the Program achieved 67% of its treatment targets. Efforts are underway to accelerate progress, supported by extended winter treatment window due to seasonal bait trials confirming ant foraging continues during winter.
The NMG noted mitigation strategies addressing outlier detections, treatment delays, and gaps and supported a tailored approach for responses based on assessed risk levels.
The 2024 Annual Report and Workplan were approved for publication and members received an update on preparations for the 2025 independent review, expected to be delivered to the NFAEP by 2025. This review will assess the Program’s performance and determine whether funding is sufficient to support the final two years of the plan.
Supported by all levels of government, the Program remains focused on eradication through targeted treatment strategies and strong stakeholder collaboration. The latest updates highlight significant steps being taken to overcome challenges and ensure a more effective and sustainable response.
The NFAEP is scheduled to meet at least twice more before the end of the year.
