Overview
The pilot project in New South Wales was led by consultant Redefining Agriculture in collaboration with NSW Local Land Services and smallholders.
The project trialled and evaluated a data-driven approach to assess the biosecurity risk levels and engagement needs for smallholders. This was achieved through a combination of social research and geospatial mapping.
The project focused on smallholder livestock biosecurity, particularly pig ownership in the Hunter Valley, Murray, and Riverina regions.
Key outcomes:
- Development of resources, such as maps and reports, to support stakeholder understanding and engagement with smallholders.
- A comprehensive project report detailing the effectiveness of the methods used and proposing innovative engagement strategies.
- Establishment of a community of practice to support swine and general livestock health.
- Improved epidemiological modelling for African swine fever and other emergency animal diseases using the collected data.
