Overview
This project will develop robust polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods to detect Theileria equi and Babesia Caballi, the pathogens that cause equine piroplasmosis (EP). These tests will complement serological tests for EP at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP).
The project will strengthen Australia's diagnostic capacity for EP. It will support testing needed for trade-related certification in the equine industry. By establishing local, National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited testing capability, the project will deliver faster, more reliable diagnosis and reduce reliance on overseas laboratories. This will give greater confidence in Australia's equine health standards.
