Purpose

This Market Access Advice is to notify exporters of updates to Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) requirements for an import licence to import some live seafood products including live rock lobster to India.

Summary of key points

The department advises exporters that some live seafood products including live rock lobsters no longer require a DGFT approved import licence prior to export to India.

Please note, DGFT continue to regulate imports of live seafood. Access can change from being ‘free’ (no import licence required) to ‘restricted’ (import licence required) at any time without prior notice.

Exporters can confirm the import licence requirements for their product via the DGFT web portal at https://www.dgft.gov.in/CP/.

  • Go to “select your ITC(HS) Code/ Product Selection”
  • Enter the Harmonised system (HS) code or description for the product.
  • Where the import condition for the product is listed as “free,” a DGFT import licence is not required for the importation of the product.

Exporters are encouraged to confirm requirements prior to export of their product.

For products listed as “restricted” the requirement to obtain an import permit apply.

Exporters are encouraged to work closely with their importer to ensure all import requirements for their product are met.
