Exporters and processing establishments are reminded that the following sourcing requirements set out in the Export Control (Fish and Fish Products) Orders 2005 (Fish Orders) are compulsory for all Australian fish and fishery products harvested for export purposes.
Dead or diseased fish or species affected by ciguatoxin
Schedule 5, Subclause 2.1 and 2.3, Fish Orders
Fish that are:
- dead at the time of harvest; or
- are diseased;
must not be prepared for export as food.
All practical measures for harvesting fish of a species that can be affected by ciguatoxin must be taken.
Notifiable diseases
Schedule 2, Subclause 9.1, Fish Orders
- Occupiers of registered establishments must notify the department if it is suspected that fish and fish products are derived from a fish that has or is suspected as having a notifiable disease.
Harmful substances
Schedule 5, Subclause 1.1, Fish Orders
Fish must not be harvested from:
- areas that may contain or are suspected to contain potentially harmful pathogens
- areas that may contain or are suspected to contain potentially harmful substances such as pesticides, fungicides, heavy metals, natural toxicants or other contaminants.
