| 16 December 2024. Darwin – Indonesia | Australian Cattle Enterprises Pty Ltd | The mortality rate for this consignment was 1.67% (5 out of 299 buffalo exported) exceeding the reportable level of 0.5% for buffalo voyages. In accordance with its usual policy, the department undertook an investigation into the mortality event. The findings of the investigation revealed that a definitive common diagnosis was not possible, circumstances surrounding the sourcing and preparation of the buffalo and voyage conditions may have contributed to the mortalities. For their next buffalo consignment, the Secretary’s delegate directed this exporter to have an Australian Government Accredited Veterinarian oversee the consignment and ensure that post-mortem examinations were performed on all buffalo mortalities, with a detailed veterinary report provided to the department within 5 days of unloading at the final port of discharge. Since the incident, the exporter has undertaken 19 further voyages of predominately cattle, 4 of which contained buffalo, to Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam with no voyage recording a voyage mortality rate exceeding the notifiable mortality level. |
