2023-25 Horticulture – Applications for the export of citrus to New Zealand 2023

02 June 2023

Purpose

This Industry Advice Notice (IAN) is to advise the citrus industry that applications for the accreditation of Queensland farms and packhouses have been temporarily extended for export to New Zealand.

Summary of changes and key points

  • Applications to export citrus to New Zealand will be temporarily re-opened for a further two weeks. Applications will close on 16 June 2023.
  • The new pathway to New Zealand allows for irradiation treatment and export of citrus fruits.
  • Only properties in Queensland are required to be accredited for the new pathways, properties in all other states can send consignments to New Zealand without accreditation.

Background

Following the Industry Advice Notice 2023-10, a new pathway for citrus to New Zealand treated with irradiation has become available, and a new commodity permitted (Tahitian limes). As applications for citrus export closed in December 2022, before these pathways were available, we recognise there may be some growers and packhouses who wish to become accredited to access these new pathways. The phytosanitary requirements for the export of citrus from Australia to New Zealand have been updated in the New Zealand Export Plan and in the Manual of Importing Country Requirements (Micor).

Accredited property responsibilities – Queensland farms and packhouses

  • Farm managers in Queensland wishing to apply must complete:
    • Application for plant export accreditation of farms
    • Attach evidence of in-field controls against Citrus Black Spot (CBS), consisting of:
      • spray diaries (from bud burst to present) with indication of which sprays target CBS/preventative sprays for generic fungal diseases (where required)
      • monthly crop monitoring records (from bud burst to present).
  • Packhouse managers in Queensland wishing to apply must complete:
    • Application for plant export accreditation of packhouses

Exporter responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the exporter to meet the requirements of the New Zealand Export Plan. The Export Plan is available in the ‘Documents' section in Micor. To access these documents, you must be a registered Micor Plants user.
