IAN 2024-67: Horticulture – Recognised treatments for citrus and blueberries to India

14 October 2024

Purpose

This Industry Advice Notice (IAN) is to advise of changes to India’s import requirements for fresh citrus and blueberry fruit exports to India.

Summary of changes and key points

  • Citrus consignments for export to India can now be treated with pre-shipment (onshore) cold treatment.
  • Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) has been included as a pest of concern for blueberry fruit to India.
  • India’s Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DAFW) has added the following requirements to treat Mediterranean fruit fly on blueberry consignments to India:
    • pre-shipment cold treatment
    • in-transit cold treatment and fumigation schedules.
  • The Micor cases and EXDOC endorsements for citrus and blueberries have been updated to reflect these changes.

Background

On 10 September 2024, DAFW released an amendment to the Plant Quarantine Order 2003. The amendment expanded the available treatment options for citrus exports to India to include pre-shipment cold treatment.

The amendment also included the addition of Mediterranean fruit fly as a pest of concern for blueberries, and provided pre-shipment cold treatment, in-transit cold treatment and fumigation schedules for treatment of this pest.

Exporter responsibilities

Familiarise yourself with the updated import requirements available for citrus and blueberry exports to India and select the appropriate treatment pathway to address pest risks.
