Australian Fumigation Accreditation Scheme

The Australian Fumigation Accreditation Scheme (AFAS) is a bilateral arrangement between the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (the department) and participating overseas government agencies. AFAS manages the high biosecurity risk posed by ineffective methyl bromide (MB) treatments performed offshore.

Treatment providers registered under AFAS are trained in AFAS requirements and undergo regular compliance assessments. This provides increased confidence in the pre-export MB treatment conducted on goods imported into Australia.

The benefit of joining AFAS for participating countries is:

  • provision of capacity-building assistance to overseas regulatory officers, in respect to registering, monitoring and auditing fumigation companies
  • improving the technical expertise of overseas fumigators and regulatory officers by providing world's best practice methyl bromide fumigation training
  • assist fumigators to maintain a high standard of fumigation performance and compliance with departmental requirements.

Treatment providers

Treatment providers registered and listed as approved on the List of treatment providers have met the minimum registration and compliance requirements.

Treatment providers in participating AFAS countries must:

  • comply with the requirements of AFAS
  • have an AFAS-accredited treatment provider performing methyl bromide treatments on goods imported into Australia
  • ensure the treatment complies with import conditions and the methyl bromide fumigation methodology.

Approved treatment providers can be found on the Pre-border Biosecurity Treatment Providers page.

If a treatment provider is suspended from other assurance schemes managed by the department, they will also be suspended from AFAS.

Treatment requirements

Treatments conducted by AFAS treatment providers must comply with our import requirements and treatment methodologies.

Useful information and links

AFAS treatment providers who intend to conduct treatments for goods that are manufactured in or offshore and bound for Australia are encouraged to lodge their treatment certificates in the certificate lodgement portal. If you require access to the certificate lodgement portal, please contact Offshore Treatments.
