Who does this notice affect?
This notice is relevant to importers of non-retorted pig meat products and associated industry participants and retailers.
What has changed?
- Cooked and uncooked (for further processing in Australia) pig meat of New Zealand origin can now be imported into Australia.
- Trade can commence immediately using agreed health certificates. The department has advised New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) accordingly.
New Zealand has been assessed as being able to meet Australia’s biosecurity requirements for non-retorted pig meat in accordance with the Generic import risk analysis (IRA) for pig meat: final import risk analysis report (February 2004) (pig meat IRA). New Zealand‘s access to Australia for cooked and uncooked (for further processing in Australia) pig meat has been allowed in accordance with Australia’s rights and obligations as a member of the World Trade Organisation and Australia’s published policy for the importation of pig meat and pig meat products. Importation into Australia will only be permitted under conditions that include existing biosecurity requirements drawn from the pig meat IRA. Food safety requirements are also provided for in the import conditions.
