22 December 2025
Who does this notice affect?
Importers of cervine and camelid fluids and tissues for laboratory research from Croatia.
Importers of natural casings for human consumption from Croatia.
What has changed?
- On 13 December 2025, the Croatian Government reported the detection of Peste de petits ruminants (PPR) in a herd of sheep in Split-Dalmatia County. As a result, the department no longer recognises Croatia as free from PPR and has now removed this country from the Peste de petits ruminants (PPR) free country list; List of countries for natural casings derived from caprine and ovine animals; List of countries approved for camelid fluids and tissues and the List of countries approved for cervine fluids and tissues effective 30 October 2025.
Note: Croatia was not approved for inclusion on the list of countries approved for ovine and caprine fluids and tissues or the list of countries approved for the import of ovine and caprine dairy products at the time of the report of the PPR outbreak on 13 December 2025. No further changes to these lists are required and there will be no impacts to trade in these commodities.
Impacted goods include:
- Laboratory goods containing cervine (deer) and camelid (camels) fluids and tissues (including but not limited to animal fluids and tissues, culture media and other lab materials) sourced from Croatia.
- Natural casings containing or derived from ovine or caprine materials sourced from Croatia.
Future biosecurity arrangements
The department will contact individual import permit holders shortly to advise them on ongoing arrangements for their import permits.
For goods that are currently in transit to Australia
The department will assess these goods on a case-by-case basis, and if the biosecurity risk can be effectively managed, the goods can be released.
