Who does this notice affect?
- Biosecurity industry participants who hold a Class 7.1 approved arrangement for the import of live ornamental fish
- Importers of live ornamental fish
- Departmental staff who attend the Class 7.1 Approved Arrangement, to inspect and release live ornamental fish undergoing the post arrival quarantine period.
What has changed?
The department has updated the ‘Approved chemicals for ornamental fish webpage’, and the approved chemicals lists. The webpage details chemicals approved for use on ornamental fish undergoing post-arrival quarantine at a Class 7.1 Approved Arrangement.
These updates were largely focused on improving how policy is conveyed, and the webpage now includes 2 separate lists of approved chemicals for ornamental fish. The first list is for marine and freshwater ornamental fish, excluding goldfish. The second list is for goldfish as well as marine and freshwater ornamental fish.
The lists act as pre-approval for use during post-entry isolation.
This update also includes the addition of new chemicals (which have been recently reviewed and approved by the department) to the lists. These include:
| Approved for use (including on goldfish) | Approved for use (excluding on goldfish) |
|---|---|
| Calcium chloride | Erythromycin |
| Disodium phosphate | Sulphadiazine |
| Hydrochloric acid | Trimethoprim |
| Phosphoric acid | Peracetic acid |
| Sodium thiosulphate | Benzalkonium chloride |
| Ivermectin |
The department will continue to review and approve all new chemicals before they are added to the lists.
The updated webpage and approved chemicals lists can be accessed via the following link: Approved chemicals for ornamental fish (www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity-trade/import/goods/live-animals/importing-live-fish-aus/approved-treatments).
