Issue Biosecurity Australia’s response
Chlorination of waste water
In the Background document, under 1.11 the third point states, “All waste water (except sewer water) will be capable of being chlorinated as directed by AQIS before discharge to waste”. As all water is capable of being chlorinated, does this paragraph mean to say “The facility must be capable of chlorinating all waste water (except sewer water) as directed by AQIS before discharge to waste? The final policy review has been amended to incorporate the suggested wording.
Exclusion of Mycoplasma synoviae
No reason is given for excluding the organism, M. synoviae from the risk assessment.Under the section 2.4, the chapter on Risk Assessment states “None of these disease agents is present in New Zealand except M. synoviae, and it is proposed that the penguins be tested for IBD, AI and ND prior to export”.  The final policy review has been amended to state: "None of these disease agents is present in New Zealand except M. synoviae, and there is no scientific evidence that exotic strains of M. synoviae are more virulent than the endemic Australian strains" and "It is proposed that the penguins be tested for IBD, AI and ND prior to export".
