This Biosecurity Advice notifies stakeholders of the release of the Final report for the non‑regulated analysis of existing policy for fresh mango fruit from Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.
The final report recommends that the importation of fresh mango fruit into Australia from Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam meets Australia’s biosecurity requirements subject to risk management measures.
The final report takes into account submissions and comments received by stakeholders on the draft report released on 28 July 2015.
Biosecurity Advice 2014/10, of 1 August 2014, announced the commencement of a non-regulated analysis of existing policy to consider proposals to import fresh mango fruit from Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam into Australia. Biosecurity Advice 2015/10, on 28 July 2015, announced the release of the draft report for a 30 day stakeholder consultation period.
This Biosecurity Advice notifies stakeholders of the release of the Final report for the non-regulated analysis of existing policy for fresh mango fruit from Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Comments from stakeholders on the draft report were taken into consideration in preparing the final report.
The final report identifies 18 pests associated with fresh mango fruit from Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam that require phytosanitary measures. All 18 pests are insects (weevils, fruit flies, mealybugs and red-banded mango caterpillar).
Australian regional differences were identified for two quarantine pests for Western Australia. The recommended phytosanitary measures take account of these regional differences.
The final report recommends a range of risk management measures in combination with a system of operational procedures to ensure quarantine standards are met. These measures are considered to reduce the risk posed by the 18 pests and achieve Australia’s appropriate level of protection (ALOP).
The recommended risk management measures include various combinations outlined below:
- irradiation for mango weevils, fruit flies, mealybugs and red-banded mango caterpillar
- vapour heat treatment for fruit flies
- hot water dipping treatment for fruit flies
- visual inspection and remedial action for mealybugs
- systems approach and visual inspection and remedial action for red-banded mango caterpillar
- area freedom (including pest free areas, pest free places of production and pest free production sites) for mango weevils and red-banded mango caterpillar.
