Animal Biosecurity Advice 2019-A10 - Commencement of a review of biosecurity risks associated with importing natural sausage casings

2 December 2019

This biosecurity advice advises stakeholders of the formal commencement of a review of current biosecurity measures for the importation of natural sausage casings for human consumption into Australia.

The Department of Agriculture will prepare a draft report, which will be issued for stakeholder comment.

The Department of Agriculture is commencing a review of current biosecurity measures for the importation of natural sausage casings for human consumption into Australia. In 1999, the department completed an import risk analysis on natural sausage casings which led to the development of import conditions for natural sausage casings derived from domestic cattle, goats, sheep and pigs.

The commencement of a review is in response to a request from industry to consider the effectiveness of salt and phosphate supplemented salt against pathogens of concern and also in response to changes in the global distribution of some diseases relevant to this commodity.

This review will take into account new and relevant peer-reviewed scientific information, international standards and relevant changes in industry practices and operational practicalities.

The next step is to prepare and issue a draft report to provide stakeholders with the opportunity to comment on the analysis. A biosecurity advice will be issued to announce that the draft report has been placed on the department’s website and to invite comments. Following the consultation period, the department will consider all comments in preparing a final report.

To receive information and updates on biosecurity risk analyses subscribe to Biosecurity Risk Analysis Animal. Subscribers will receive biosecurity advice notices and other notifications about animal biosecurity policy.
