Actions taken

27 April 2016

Landmark Operations Pty Ltd

The reportable mortality rate for this consignment was 2.29%. The reportable mortality rate for long haul cattle is 1%.

Pneumonia was the main factor contributing to the mortalities. Of the 104 mortalities during the voyage 102 were caused by pneumonia and two as a result of bloat. A further 16 cattle died with pneumonia during the 3 days discharge and 35 cattle  were euthanised in port due to being unfit to discharge.

The majority of the voyage was undertaken in calm seas. On days 6-8, the vessel experienced rough seas, high winds and rain. Open decks suffered significant water coverage and were difficult to keep dry throughout this period. Further inclement weather was experienced on day eighteen of the voyage.

The exporter engaged the services of veterinary consultants to advise on shipment preparation and a voyage disease mitigation strategy. On voyages following this shipment Landmark used medicated fodder and dust extracted wood shavings to reduce the risk of respiratory disease.

The department has not taken any regulatory action in relation to this mortality event.

3 July 2016

Emanuel Exports Pty Ltd

The reportable mortality rate for this consignment was 2.51%. The reportable mortality rate for sheep is 2%.

Heat stress was the main factor contributing to the mortalities. This was a result of extreme humidity experienced over several days while transiting the lower Arabian Gulf and discharging in Doha Port at Qatar.

The department required the exporter amend their comprehensive heat stress management plan for the next consignment to the Middle East including further reducing stocking density of the vessel, loading industrial fans to assist with ventilation, changing the port rotation, keeping ear tags from the mortalities and investigating what other weather forecasting information can be accessed. This consignment reported a mortality rate of 1.37%

5 November 2016

North Australian Cattle Company

The reportable mortality rate for this consignment was 1.88%. The reportable mortality rate for voyages < 10 days for buffalo is 0.5%.

Of the 7 buffalo that died during the voyage, two died of unknown causes and two were reported as downers (unable to stand). On arrival at the port, there were an additional two downers and another animal sustained injuries. These three animals were euthanised before discharge.

NACC have not exported any further consignments of buffalo since this reportable incident.

The department has not taken any regulatory action in relation to this mortality event.
