44-2016 - Changes to import requirements for mined fertilisers – bags containing not more than 100kg and liquid mined fertiliser

2 June 2016

Who does this notice affect?

Importers, customs agents and brokers involved in the import of consignments of small bags of mined fertiliser and liquid mined fertilisers, which are not made of animal, plant or biological material.

What is changing?

From 16 June 2016 an import permit will be required for mined fertiliser in bags of not more than 100kg and liquid mined fertiliser. Changes to the import conditions for these goods coincides with the commencement of the new Biosecurity Act 2015 on 16 June 2016.

If you import these goods on/or after 16 June a permit will be required and must be issued prior to the consignment arriving.

The aim of the new arrangement is to realign import requirements for similar products based on risk.

BICON will be updated on 16 June with the new permit requirement, including that mined fertiliser in bags of less 100kg will be subject to the same inspection requirements as other mined fertilisers.

BICON has already been adjusted to allow importers to apply for permits in advance of 16 June and for those applications to be processed prior to commencement of the new biosecurity legislation where this is possible.  We are also contacting past importers of small bagged mined fertiliser and containerised mined product to ensure they are aware of the change.
