Who does this notice affect?
All importers of marine finfish for either human consumption or for use in aquaculture or as bait.
What has changed?
As outlined in Import Industry Advice notice 141-2021, the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment has undertaken a review of species known to be susceptible to diseases of Biosecurity concern. This review has identified several species which require additional risk mitigation measures. These updated lists are now in force. To review the lists, please refer to the relevant BICON case, or at Animal Biosecurity Advice 2021-A02.
Why did the department make this change?
In 2020 the department undertook a review of species to ensure that the risk species lists for non-salmonid marine finfish for human consumption and baitfish (available on BICON) are up to date and are effective at managing contemporary biosecurity threats.
The review identified several species of finfish which are now recognized as susceptible to diseases of concern. Subsequently, the department added these to the lists of imported fish species that require control measures.
