61-2021: Sea container measures to protect against khapra beetle

12 April 2021

Who does this notice affect?

Stakeholders in the import and shipping industries—including vessel masters, freight forwarders, treatment providers, Biosecurity Industry Participants, importers, customs brokers, principal shipping agents, and any other operators in the sea container supply and logistics chain.

What has changed?

Phase 6A of the khapra beetle urgent actions has commenced*. From today, all FCL/FCX sea containers where high-risk plant products are packed into the sea container in a khapra beetle target risk country must be treated offshore using a department approved treatment option.

To assist you in meeting these new requirements we have updated our website to include the following additional information.

These updates can be found at: awe.gov.au/khapra-containers.

*Implementation of Phase 6A is being staggered. Changes to FCL/FCX containers destined for rural grain growing areas of Australia will commence in mid-2021.
