National Statement on Animal Welfare

The National Statement on Animal Welfare (national statement) reflects the shared commitment by Australian, state and territory Agriculture Ministers to jointly lead the renewal of the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS).

The national statement identifies opportunities for sustainable improvements for Australia’s animal welfare system and sets the vision for the renewal of the AAWS. It signals to Australians and international trading partners that national collaboration on animal welfare priorities is a shared goal of all governments.

The national statement was informed by extensive consultation, with oversight by the Animal Welfare Task Group (AWTG), and in collaboration between the:

  • Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF)
  • Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW)
  • Department of Health and Aged Care (DoHAC).
    • National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)
    • Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
