Farm Household Allowance

The Farm Household Allowance (FHA) program provides assistance to commercial-scale farmers and their partners who are experiencing financial hardship for any reason.

The program provides eligible farmers and their partners with a package of assistance that includes:

Japan bovine offal quota

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry manages 8 Japan quotas including edible bovine offal. These quotas were put in place by the Japan–Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA).

Australian exporters can export specific quantities of edible bovine offal products at reduced tariff rates through this quota. Access to the quota is on a first-come, first-served (FCFS) basis until the available quota amount has been exhausted.

Food Safety Recognition Agreements (Arrangements) with other countries

Food safety recognition agreements (arrangements) can be mutual, meaning both countries recognise each other’s food safety regulatory systems as comparable (equivalent) to their own, or they can be unilateral, meaning only one country out of the two will recognise the other country’s food safety systems. Australia is able to recognise another country’s food safety system as comparable (equivalent) to our own. This may involve reviewing that country’s domestic food safety regulatory system to determine whether it provides similar protection to consumers to that of Australia.

Audit arrangements for export registered food establishments - dairy, eggs and fish

Establishments seeking to become export registered must be audited by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry as part of the registration process.

We may conduct a follow-up audit to assess the first full run of an establishment’s processes before handing responsibility for scheduled audits to state regulatory authorities, under agreed service delivery arrangements.

Check who has responsibility for scheduled audits of export registered dairy, eggs and fish establishments in your state.

Documentation, registration and licensing

The department controls exports of agricultural products listed or ‘prescribed’ in the Export Control Act 2020 and associated rules.

What we do

The department works closely with internal and external stakeholders to develop and maintain national certification systems to meet importing country requirements. This includes national oversight of our service delivery network, instructional material, technical training, verification, and engagement of stakeholders.
