The Montreal Process

The Montréal Process is an initiative which arose from a resolution at the 1992 Earth Summit. It called for sustainable management of forests and was further developed at a 1993 conference on temperate and boreal forests in Montreal, Canada. The Working Group on Criteria and Indicators for the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Temperate and Boreal Forests ("Montréal Process") was subsequently formed in Geneva in June 1994.

International Tropical Timber Organization

The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) is an intergovernmental organisation for promoting the sustainable management, restoration and conservation of tropical forests and trade in tropical forest resources including improved market intelligence. It began operations in 1987 and its headquarters are located in Yokohama, Japan. Its members manage about 80 per cent of the world's tropical forests and are responsible for 90 per cent of the global tropical timber trade.

International forums

The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has overall responsibility for representing Australia's interests in international and regional forums and processes where forestry matters are discussed. These include:

Transport Network Strategic Investment Tool (TraNSIT): Optimising transport choice for plantation harvests

Quality transport infrastructure is essential for efficiently moving logs from plantations to mills for processing or ports for export.

The then Department of Agriculture and Water Resources engaged CSIRO in 2016 to expand its Transport Network Strategic Investment Tool (TraNSIT) to include networks across Australia for transporting production from plantation forests.

TraNSIT’s most important value is in the opportunities it provides for optimising transport routes across supply chains and informing future investment in transport infrastructure.

Forestry Ministers Meetings

Forestry Ministers Meetings are a forum for ministers with responsibility for forestry from the Australian, state and territory governments to discuss and share approaches to priorities affecting the forest and wood products industries.

The meetings were established in 2016 to share information, ideas, and progress policies.

Agreed priorities are:
