Australia’s biosecurity legislation allows us to adapt to changing biosecurity risk. From time to time, we update import requirements to strengthen control on goods where risk has increased, and reduce control where it is no longer necessary.

Australia exercises strict biosecurity measures designed to protect plant and animal health.
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry protects Australia from exotic pests and diseases, while the Australian Border Force intercepts illegal goods, such as drugs and weapons. These agencies work together at airports, seaports, and mail centres to detect and deter the unlawful movement of goods into Australia.
The Environmental Biosecurity Project Fund (EBPF) was established in 2018. It provides an annual allocation of $825,000.
The Environmental Biosecurity Office (EBO) administer the EBPF. We provide leadership, coordination and engagement on national environmental biosecurity issues. We play a key role in strengthening Australia’s preparedness and response capabilities.
Invasive species are a key threat to Australia’s biodiversity. They are damaging to Australia’s unique ecosystems, as well as to the agriculture sector. The highest-risk exotic invasive species have been identified and compiled into the Australia’s Exotic Environmental Pest List (EEPL).
Enhancing Australia’s environmental biosecurity is the responsibility of the Australian Chief Environmental Biosecurity Officer (ACEBO).
