Under section 40-G of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 primary producers and other rural businesses earning income from the land may be eligible for tax deductions for fencing erected to prevent land degradation. To be eligible, fences must be erected to separate different land classes in accordance with an approved land management plan.

The Australian Government provides a range of primary producer tax benefits to help farmers protect agricultural land.
You may be able to claim a deduction for capital costs you incur on a Landcare operation, and riparian management works. This includes the establishment of shelterbelts on land used in an agricultural business.

For the purposes of this document, ‘community–based groups’ refers to Landcare and related groups founded on volunteerism and stewardship. These include farmers and pastoralists, Indigenous communities and citizens involved in conservation projects on public and private land.
