Biosecurity officers are playing a vital role in supporting Exercise Pitch Black, one of the Royal Australian Air Force’s largest multinational military exercises, taking place in the Northern Territory from 20 July to 7 August.
Working in collaboration with the Australian Defence Force and international partners, our biosecurity officers are conducting inspections and biosecurity clearances for incoming aircraft, vehicles, equipment and supplies arriving in Australia for the exercise.
Australian biosecurity officers will inspect more than 100 aircraft, along with incoming cargo, vehicles and personnel from 19 partner and allied nations participating in Exercise Pitch Black. The department’s involvement helps ensure Australia’s world-leading biosecurity system remains protected while supporting the efficient movement of people and equipment. Before goods and equipment can enter Australia, biosecurity officers assess and inspect them for pests, diseases, weeds and contaminants that could threaten our unique environment, agriculture industry and economy from exotic pests and diseases.
The department’s involvement in Exercise Pitch Black demonstrates the important balance between supporting major international exercises and safeguarding Australia’s environment, agriculture and economy.
