30 November 2023

On the 30 November 2023, the department published the updated Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL) (version 3.3).

ASEL 3.3 introduces changes to maintain or improve animal health and welfare outcomes, update definitions and improve clarity and usability of the standards.

The 2023 ASEL update addressed matters raised by stakeholders relating to the export of livestock by both sea and air. It incorporated analysis of voyage reports, review of scientific literature, and internal and external consultation. This included a 6-week public consultation period, concluding on 4 August 2023.

The department received 33 submissions from a range of stakeholders including animal welfare groups, industry bodies, livestock exporters, producers and members of the public. All submissions were considered in finalising ASEL version 3.3. Please read a summary of feedback received and the department’s response.

The majority of amendments will commence on 30 November 2023. There are 7 amendments which will commence in 2024 as they require additional time for effective implementation.

For more information on the changes introduced in ASEL 3.3, visit the ASEL Update webpage.

Questions or feedback on the ASEL can be emailed to ASELReview@aff.gov.au.
