The Australian Government is working with stakeholders to develop the National Food Security Strategy.
The “National Food Security Strategy – discussion paper” was published on 13 August 2025. We invited submissions and comment from the community. We received over 400 submissions. Insights from the consultation process and submissions were published on 28 November and are available at Have Your Say.
The department has entered a co-design phase to help inform the development of the National Food Security Strategy. From February to June 2026, a series of workshops will be held across capital cities, regional and remote Australia.
Capturing a diversity of voices is important. Key stakeholders from across the food system will be able to participate in the workshops. This includes representatives from academia, charities, governments, industries and peak bodies in key sectors including food production, food consumption, food safety and nutrition, international trade, national security and climate/environment.
The co-design process
Co-design is a way to tackle complex challenges by placing those impacted by change at the centre of design.
Creating solutions with a wide range of people will allow for the most effective and impactful solution.
Effective co-design brings together people with personal experience of (or connection to) the issue, along with others who can contribute valuable insights.
The design process will include testing and refining of potential solutions. The workshops will be run by co-design facilitators, that bring industry and community voices to the design of policy and programs.
How to get involved
More details regarding the workshops will be provided soon. If you would like more information on the co-design process, please contact codesign@aff.gov.au.
